MILKING IT: @JUSTAGIRLNOTAGOD
Interview by TMILKY
Introducing one of my favourite online creators. Inventor of good outfits. Unparalleled beauty.
What milk goes into your drinks?
I prefer no milk, but otherwise definitely oat.
Shoot me the first word that comes to you after each phrase.
Brown women. goddesses
Curiosity. intuition
Creative Direction. self expression
What expectations have you set for yourself when it comes to your career online?
To express myself freely, evolve my style, meet like minded people, and to hopefully inspire others to shop more sustainable.
What expectations have others set for you, as a brown woman, that you’re willing to look past?
Growing up I felt that making myself inferior to others equaled having respect. It took alot of healing and introspection to finally be comfortable enough to stand up for myself and to set firm boundaries. If we don't make the change now, we are passing the hurt on to the next generation. I proudly stand up for myself now, because every time i do it feels like I'm also standing up for every (brown) girl that was afraid to ever speak up.
Do you think you’ve garnered a community?
I hope I did, a little community of vintage fashion enthusiasts.
Have you ever had a negative experience online that affected your confidence toward posting?
No. But to be honest this was something that has kept me from making a social media account for years. I used to be so scared of being perceived that even the thought of posting myself made me panic. But by realizing I have no control of how others think or perceive the world has freed me of my mental cage. There is nothing you and I can do that will be loved by every single one, so you might as well do the thing you love doing.
Dedication is important when it comes to creative crafts, though it’s hard to always have passion. How do you make sure you keep loving fashion?
By continually trying to push my own boundaries. I am always on the hunt for cool and unique pieces, or creative styling ideas that are just slightly out of my comfort zone. Just enough to challenge me and get the creative juices flowing.
Fashion is moving. But, what else moves you?
Art, music, theater, poetry, cinema. I love when people express their true self freely and are able to transmute their emotions into something tangible. It always makes me feel alive and inspired, it's my personal depression antidote.
Talk to me about why you do what you do.
Making outfit videos allows me to express myself and be creative in different ways. There are so many factors that go into it, picking your outfits, picking the setting, editing the videos, choosing the right music. They all add up to one 10 second time capsule of what I looked like in that very moment. This gives me a change to document my aesthetic and to look back on my (style) evolution through the years.
